Simona Onori received her Laurea Degree, summa cum laude, (CSE) in 2003, her M.S. (ECE) in 2004, her Ph.D. (Control Engineering) in 2007, from University of Rome ‘Tor Vergata’, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, USA, and University of Rome ‘Tor Vergata’, respectively.

Prior to joining the Department of Automotive Engineering faculty in August 2013, Dr. Onori was a research scientist at the Center for Automotive Research at  Ohio State University (CAR-OSU) and lecturer at the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dept. at Ohio State University where she taught at undergraduate and graduate levels. She has also previously worked with IBM (2000-2002) as well as Thales-Alenia Space (2007) in Rome, Italy.

Her background is in control system theory and her current research interests are in ground vehicle propulsion systems, including electric and hybrid-electric drivetrains, energy storage systems, and fuel cell systems. Her areas of emphasis within these categories are 1) modeling, simulation, optimization and control for advanced powertrain systems, 2) integrated power train control and optimization, 3) damage propagation modeling in complex systems, and 4) aging, characterization, modeling and identification of batteries for state of health estimation and remaining useful life prediction. Her research has been funded, among others, by Honda Japan, Ford, General Motors, Cummins, the National Science Foundation and the US Department of Energy.

During the period from 2009 to 2013 she was Program Manager of the automotive industry research consortium at CAR-OSU, which includes the participation of 20 automotive OEMs and suppliers.

She is an IEEE, ASME and SAE member. She is an ASME-Associate Editor for the American Control Conference and Dynamic System Control Conference, and an Associate Editor for SAE International Journal of Advanced Powertrains. She is member of the ASME Automotive and Transportation System Committee, the IEEE TC on Automotive Controls, the SAE Congress Sessions organizer on hybrids, EVs, propulsion motors, & power electronics.

She is the recipient of the 2012 Lumley Interdisciplinary Research Award by OSU College of Engineering and also recipient of the TechColumbus 2011 Outstanding Technology Team Award.
