He received the B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the Technological Educational Institute of Patras, Greece, in 1994, where he graduated cum laude, and the Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Greece, in 2000. He received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 2004, and 2008. His research interests include stochastic control, analysis and optimization of stochastic systems, nonlinear optimization and convex analysis, learning in complex systems, intelligent transportation, energy and sustainable systems, and smart buildings.

Andreas has worked as an analyst in the Hellenic Navy from 1998-2000, and as a product engineer in industry assigned on major projects focusing on military communications systems, commercial telecommunication systems and command control systems from 2000-2001. Before he joined Oak Ridge National Laboratory he was a Senior Researcher with General Motors Global Research & Development conducting research in the area of stochastic control, and hybrid systems with an emphasis on applications to advanced propulsion systems.
