Kensuke Kawai retired

Please let me start this newsletter with an appraisal for Mr. Kensuke Kawai, who has recently retired after decades of invaluable achievements for our Technical Committee on Human-Machine Systems. Having received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Keio University, Japan, in 1972 and 1974, Mr. Kawai joined the Toshiba Corporation and was later appointed the Technology Executive of Thermal and Hydroelectric Power Engineering, Power Systems and Services Company. In this position, he researched and developed human-machine systems to improve the reliability and safety of plant operations. These contributions have earned him, among others, an IEEE fellowship in 2003. As Vice Chair and Chair of the IFAC TC 4.5, and as an editor of the IFAC Control Engineering Practice, he has promoted the development of human-machine systems and deserves our respect and our appreciation.

Dear Kensuke, on behalf of all TC 4.5 members I would like to express my sincere thanks for your work!

From the Chair: TC Chair Selection

The IFAC Technical Board has accepted the following new selection procedure for Technical Committee (TC) Chairs. The information about the new selection procedure should be distributed to all the chairpersons and members of the Technical Committee.

  1. Each TC member can propose a TC Chair candidate to the TC.
  2. The TC will select the chair candidate by voting in the TC meeting or by email.
  3. The selection procedure of the TC Chair must be documented in the minutes of the TC’s meeting and in the TC Chair’s annual report.
  4. If the TC recommends its current chair to continue the second triennium, the evaluation of the activities of the current TC Chair must be given by the Coordinating Committee (CC) Chair.

Our own selection will begin on the next TC 4.5 meeting at the 10th IFAC/IFIP/IFORS/IEA Symposium on Analysis, Design, and Evaluation of Human-Machine Systems, September 4 – 6, 2007, in Seoul/Korea.
