IAMES2018 focuses on Integrated Assessment Modeling (IAM), a scientific approach aimed at appraising environmental policies. It is a participative and iterative process in which scientists from different disciplines, policy makers and other stakeholders work together to merge knowledge from multiple domains (engineering, chemistry, physics, social and life sciences, economics, …) into a single framework, generating structured information useful for policy making.

In the world of today society places heavy demands on the environment in general and water resources in particular. Waterways support a range of services including agriculture from irrigation, ecosystems, transport, local communities, and social amenities. Climate change interferes with the supply of water, so regulation of the water level to balance irrigation and environmental needs and keep the rivers navigable is of increasing importance.

We are delighted with the large number of education sessions and a record number of papers (61) at the world congress and the evidence of activity from our members. These include a demonstrator session and several invited sessions (Automatic control in aerospace, software in control education, virtual and remote labs and benchmarks in control education) as well as regular papers and a panel session discussing the results of the recently completed survey on control curricula (A survey of international views on a first course in systems and control for engineering undergraduates, published in the IFAC Journal of Systems and Control, 2020).

There are dramatic changes in international stability. We can think of the global uncertainty of financial systems, threats of terrorism, environmental threats such as recently witnessed in Japan, the problems of East Africa and so on. What can control systems engineers, automation engineers and other technologists contribute to solving these problems? This major event brought together technologies, applications, methodologies, systems effects and other contributions which will address stability in local and international systems, including political. economic, social, technological and other systems. The 16th IFAC Conference on Technology, Culture and International Stability - TECIS 2015, organisaed by the Bulgarian IFAC NMO and held in beautiful and ancient Sozopol in the Black Sea, brought together researchers and practitioners from industry and academia to give an overview of the state of the art, to present new research results and to exchange ideas and experiences. The conference formally announced 1. the new "Young IFAC Members Forum" chaired by Amy Stapleton (MITRA Trajectories) and Nathalia Kobza (ESTIEM). 2. A new Working Group in Cost Oriented Automation to be chaired by Prof. Peter Kopacek The conference also held a convocation on its fringes to debate future directions for IFAC generally and how TC 9-5 might demonstrate leadership, in light of emerging concerns about uncertainty and instability in international affairs. More details of the important outcomes of the conference are included below, in the TC minutes and in the conference proceedings available from Elsevier.
