Introduction to Discrete Event Systems
 By: Christos Cassandras  and  Stephane Lafortune

The second edition of the popular textbook "Introduction to Discrete Event Systems" by Christos Cassandras and Stephane Lafortune was published in December 2007 by Springer. The first edition of this textbook was published in 1999 (Kluwer) and sold over 1600 copies worldwide.

Distinctive features of the second edition include:
- more detailed treatment of equivalence of automata, event diagnosis, and decentralized event diagnosis;
- expanded treatment of centralized and decentralized control of partially-observed systems;
- new sections on timed automata with guards (in the Alur-Dill formalism) and hybrid automata;
- an introduction to hybrid systems;
- updated coverage of discrete event simulation, including new software tools available;
- recent developments in sensitivity analysis for discrete event systems as well as hybrid systems.

"Introduction to Discrete Event Systems" is a comprehensive introduction to the field of discrete event
systems, offering a breadth of coverage that makes the material accessible to readers of varied backgrounds. The book emphasizes a unified modeling framework that transcends specific application areas, linking the following topics in a coherent manner: language and automata theory, supervisory control, Petri net theory, Markov chains and queueing theory, discrete event simulation, and concurrent estimation techniques.

The chapter titles are:
    Chapter 1 - Systems and Models
    Chapter 2 - Languages and Automata
    Chapter 3 - Supervisory Control
    Chapter 4 - Petri Nets
    Chapter 5 - Timed and Hybrid Models
    Chapter 6 - Stochastic Timed Automata
    Chapter 7 - Markov Chains
    Chapter 8 - Introduction to Queueing Theory
    Chapter 9 - Controlled Markov Chains
    Chapter 10 - Introduction to Discrete-Event Simulation
    Chapter 11 - Sensitivity and Analysis and Concurrent Estimation

This textbook is valuable to advanced-level students and researchers in a variety of disciplines where the study of discrete event systems is relevant: control, communications, computer engineering, computer science, manufacturing engineering, operations research, and industrial engineering.

WODES'08, 9th International Workshop on Discrete Event Systems
Göteborg, Sweden, Chalmers University of Technology, May 28-30, 2008

Welcome to the 9th International Workshop on Discrete Event Systems, WODES'08, May 28-30, 2008 at Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden.  Around 100 papers were submitted to WODES'08, and these papers are now being  reviewed by the IPC

Please note that it is still possible to submit papers on benchmark examples.
The deadline is April 1, see http://www.wodes2008.org/pages/benchmark.php .

Best regards,

Bengt Lennartson

Editor-in-Chief: V. Lakshmikantham

This unique journal on hybrid systems is a new series (series C) of the Non Linear Analysis Journal of Elsevier.

Nonlinear Analysis: Hybrid Systems welcomes all important research and expository papers in any discipline. Papers that are principally concerned with the theory of hybrid systems should contain significant results indicating relevant applications. Papers that emphasize applications should consist
of important real world models and illuminating techniques. Papers that interrelate various aspects of hybrid systems will be most welcome.

There are tight connections between this Journal and the activities of TC 1.3. A special issue of the Journal is dedicated to the publication of peer-review, extended versions of 10 papers selected from the IFAC ADHS'O6 conference.

Another special issue will be dedicated to a selection of best papers on Hybrid Systems from the IFAC World Congress.

IFAC affiliation for this Journal is under negociation with the IFAC publication committee.

Paper submissions and proposals of special issues from members of our TC are most welcome.
